Four days of innovation: Boix Demo Days in Nordhorn

Over the course of four dynamic days in Nordhorn, Germany, Boix Europe opened its doors to customers, partners and industry professionals for an in-depth, hands-on experience of the latest developments in cardboard packaging automation. What made these Demo Days stand out was not just the technology on display, but the quality of conversations, the practical insights shared, and the clear sense of where the industry is heading.

Unlike traditional trade fairs, the Nordhorn setting offered something more valuable: time and space for meaningful dialogue. Visitors didn’t just pass by, they stayed, explored and engaged. On average, guests spent between one and a half to two hours fully immersed in Boix solutions, gaining a deeper understanding of how automation and sustainable packaging can work in their own operations.

A sector in transition
The timing of the Demo Days could not have been more relevant. With the upcoming PPWR legislation on the horizon, set to take effect in 2030, the packaging industry is preparing for significant change. At the same time, automation continues to advance rapidly. These Demo Days highlighted how cardboard packaging solutions are positioned to play a key role in that transition. While Boix has long been active in sectors such as fresh produce (Agriculture), e-commerce, meat and bakery, there is still a growing sense of opportunity within these sectors. The conversations in Nordhorn made one thing clear: the demand for efficient, sustainable and automated solutions is accelerating.

Innovation in action
One of the key advantages of the Demo Days format was the opportunity to see machines running live, within complete production lines. Among the highlights was the HAT MINI lid forming machine, a compact solution that has been gaining traction since its introduction. Originally developed for e-commerce applications, automated lid forming is now proving its value in the food sector as well. By working with flat-packed materials, companies can significantly optimise logistics, reduce storage space and improve operational efficiency. For larger growers and packers, especially in segments such as peppers, aubergines and cucumbers, these types of automated lines are becoming increasingly relevant as labour pressures and cost considerations continue to grow.

Another eye-catching development was the collaboration with Green OX, resulting in a machine capable of producing robust cardboard pallets with a load capacity of up to 1,200 kg. This kind of cross-sector innovation reflects a broader trend: solutions developed for one industry are increasingly finding applications in others.

Looking ahead: new technologies and market demand
Visitors were also given an early look at a new topseal solution designed for closing cardboard punnets, such as those used for mushrooms, soft fruit and snack vegetables. Although still under development, the interest it generated was unmistakable. This growing attention is closely linked to the wider industry shift towards reducing plastic usage. As sustainability becomes a central focus, driven in part by upcoming regulations, cardboard-based solutions are gaining momentum across the entire food sector.

An experience worth repeating
If there was one clear takeaway from the Demo Days in Nordhorn, it is this: seeing is believing. The combination of live demonstrations, tailored discussions and real-world applications created an experience that simply cannot be replicated elsewhere. For those who attended, it was a valuable opportunity to explore what’s next in packaging. For those who didn’t, it’s a reminder not to miss the next one.
